Ensuring the Safety and
Well-Being of Our Visitors and Cats

Daily Comprehensive Cleaning & Disinfecting

In order to prevent any possible transfer of illness from cats to humans and vice versa, we have an extensive cleaning protocol. So each day, our space is cleaned and disinfected with an approved cleaner that is safe for our cats and visitors. We clean and disinfect the floors, surfaces, food bowls, and water bowls, letting the surfaces dry afterwards for maximum effect.

Separate Litter Room

You’ll notice that in the back of our space there is a “cats-only” room with a cat door where all the litter boxes are located. These litter boxes are cleaned three times a day - cats really insist on a clean litter box. Furthermore, the HVAC system exhausts through the back of that room to the outside, so that odors and germs are minimized in the joint human-cat area.

Veterinary Care and Daily Wellness Checks

Our rescue partner is amazing at ensuring that our cats are healthy and have received the veterinary care they need before they are placed at the cafe. All cats are up to date on their shots, are spayed/neutered, and microchipped before they arrive. Once at the Kitty Cat Cafe and Adoption Lounge, each cat gets a daily wellness check by our staff of their eyes, ears, nose, mouth, nails, mobility, and coat as well as a weekly weight check and ringworm check using a UV Wood’s light. If there are any signs of illness, we immediately consult with our shelter partner, their vet, and the Massachusetts Department of Agriculture, while also moving the cat to our comfy quarantine room.

Quarantine Room

Per Massachusetts Department of Agriculture regulations, we have an approved Quarantine Room where cats who shows sign of illness can spend time in a comfy area while we work to diagnose and remedy the issue. The Quarantine Room has a separate air flow through our specially designed HVAC system, and a separate sink so that if there are any illnesses they don’t spread to the other cats.

Frequent Hand Sanitizing and Washing

We know that best way to prevent germs from spreading from cats to humans, humans to cats, cats to cats, or humans to humans is frequent and thorough hand sanitizing and hand washing. At our entrance, you will check in, get your brief orientation to the cafe, and be asked to use our approved sanitizer. We also ask you to sanitize your hands before exiting the cafe. We also highly recommend that you thoroughly wash your hands in our convenient hand-washing station before consuming any food and then after your visit.

If you’d like to see our comprehensive protocols for health and safety that we’ve developed based on guidance from the Peabody Department of Health, the Massachusetts Department of Agriculture, and our mentor cat cafes, please email kittycatcafema@gmail.com. We will also have copies available throughout the cafe.
